Every game you own has an expiry date

Nobody prints it on the box. Shelf-Life checks your game library, finds the games that depend on servers or licences that can disappear, and warns you before they're switched off.

Where your games live

On someone else's servers

Online-only games need a publisher's servers to start, sync and sell. Your copy only works while those machines stay switched on.

Then

The lights go out

Every label in this hall is a real game whose servers were switched off. Some were free to play. Others were paid for.

1.29M EU citizens signed the Stop Killing Games initiative asking for a fix. In June 2026 the European Commission chose voluntary industry codes instead of a law.

Shelf-Life

We watch the switches for you

Shelf-Life checks every game in your library against the things that end games, then tags each one so you know which to worry about.

  • Safe for now
  • Worth watching
  • At risk
  • Already gone

Switched off, for real

49 games shut down since 2018, newest first. Shelf-Life keeps this kind of record for every publisher, so you can see a pattern before you buy.

Dates are from each publisher's own shutdown announcement. Every shutdown → Check any game →

Shelf-Life is free and independent. If the ledger helped you, you can support it.

Shutdown Watch

One short email a week: new shutdowns, dates coming up, and news about physical games and what you really own. Read past issues.

Told in time, not too late

These are real announcements, written the way Shelf-Life would have sent them to anyone who owned the game.

  • Server closures, with the date
  • Games being pulled from sale
  • Offline patches and private-server releases
  • Refunds, so you know to check for one

Based on real announcements. Shelf-Life didn't exist yet.

Six things decide a tag

ONLINE

Online requirement

Does it need the publisher's server to start, even in single-player? This is the biggest single risk.

LICENCE

Licensed content

Real cars, teams, songs and brands come with licences that expire. When they do, games are pulled from sale.

RECORD

Publisher record

How many online games has this publisher closed, and how much notice did players get?

PLAYERS

Player numbers

A steady fall in players usually comes before a shutdown is announced.

MEDIA

What's in the box

Is the full game on the disc or cartridge, or does the box only hold a download licence?

DRM

Copy protection

Can you back it up and run it without a launcher checking in?

Check before you pay

The extension puts a Shelf-Life check on store pages, so you see the risk while you're still deciding. Here's what it would have said about The Crew before it was pulled from sale.
